Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Assist with federal regulatory matters related to two accredited institutions of higher education, including those related to Title IV, military student funding, and financial products.
Produce executive-level legal memos on statutory and regulatory issues germane to the company.
Provide legal analysis and advice to administrators on policy matters, especially regulatory compliance issues.
Investigate legal issues and recommend action to administrators.
Research federal and state legal questions.
Assist with general corporate matters.
Review university programs, procedures and policies for legal compliance.
Provide legal and compliance training to in-house clients.
Assist with litigation and administrative proceedings to which company is a party.
Job Skills:
Excellent analytical, oral and written communications skills.
Ability to produce high quality legal work product with little direction.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Strong computer/word processing skills, including knowledge of standard Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Ability and willingness to apply independent judgment in a dynamic environment.
Excellent negotiation and communications skills
Work Experience:
Proven comparable law firm experience.
At least eight years of experience in the practice of law, preferably in a highly regulated industry.
3-5 years of experience as a corporate lawyer, a staff attorney or associate attorney for a corporate law firm, or as in-house counsel for a corporation.
Higher education experience strongly preferred.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree and JD from an ABA-accredited law school required.
Certificates, Licenses, and registrations:
Bar admission is required in one or more of the following jurisdictions: Virginia, Minnesota, Maryland or Washington, DC.
Other:
Must be able to travel 10% of the time.
Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
Typical office setting.
Mobility within the office including movement from floor to floor.
Travel via plane, car, and metro may be required to perform this job.
Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week when business needs warrant.
Access information using a computer.
Effectively communicate, both up and down the management chain.
Effectively cope with stressful situations.
Strong mental acuity.
Regular, dependable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job.
