Job Overview
Capture Higher Ed is seeking a skilled and motivated Data Scientist to join our growing Data Science team. In this role, you’ll contribute to the design, development, and delivery of predictive models, behavioral analytics, and AI-driven features that directly impact enrollment outcomes for colleges and universities.
You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams—including Product, Engineering, and Client Success—to apply advanced analytics, machine learning, and large language models (LLMs) to real-world challenges in higher education. This is a high-impact role with strong mentorship and leadership support, reporting directly to the Director of Data Science.
Key Responsibilities
Predictive Modeling & Machine Learning
· Develop and maintain predictive models (e.g., application and enrollment likelihood, segmentation, clustering)
· Apply supervised and unsupervised learning techniques to partner data
· Implement and test attribution models and benchmarks to evaluate campaign and financial aid effectiveness
· Build and fine-tune LLM-based solutions and prompt templates for scalable product features
Analytics & Insight Generation
· Analyze performance data across Capture’s platforms to generate insights and actionable recommendations
· Assist in experimentation, A/B testing, and impact evaluation of predictive services and interventions
· Help define and validate KPIs for model performance and business success
AI Integration & Innovation
· Contribute to the development of AI-driven product features alongside engineering and product teams
· Stay up to date on advancements in data science, AI, and higher education to support innovation
· Collaborate on tools that improve model explainability, reproducibility, and performance monitoring
Data Engineering & Management Support
· Collaborate with data engineers to ensure data pipelines support modeling needs
· Assist in creating clean, documented, and reproducible workflows for training and deploying models
· Conduct exploratory data analysis (EDA) and feature engineering to optimize model accuracy
Stakeholder Collaboration
· Partner with internal teams to understand data needs and ensure solutions are aligned to institutional goals
· Present findings and model logic to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
· Support the Client Success and Marketing teams with data-backed recommendations and optimization insights
Qualifications
Required:
· 2–5 years of experience in data science or machine learning roles
· Proficiency in Python and common data science libraries (pandas, scikit-learn, NumPy, etc.)
· Strong knowledge of SQL for data querying and manipulation
· Experience with ML modeling techniques (classification, regression, clustering, time-series)
· Familiarity with LLMs and prompt engineering concepts
· Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences
· Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, Applied Math)
Preferred:
· Experience in higher education, edtech, or marketing analytics
· Exposure to AWS-based ML tools and environments
· Experience with model performance tuning and A/B testing frameworks
· Background in developing AI-enhanced features or personalization systems
· Familiarity with tools for experiment tracking and model management
