ABOUT THE WORTHGATE SCHOOL
The Worthgate School offers an outstanding international pre-university educational experience to students aged 13+ from all over the world. Students study for GCSEs, A levels and University Foundation Programmes, and preparing for admission to universities across the country and elsewhere. We pride ourselves on our approach to teaching and learning, with small class sizes and an informal atmosphere ensuring that students are treated as individuals and build great relationships with staff.
JOB OVERVIEW
The RSHE Teacher will deliver a high quality Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) education programme [to include PSHE content] that supports pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and preparedness for life beyond school. The role requires an individual who is passionate about pastoral care, confident in facilitating sensitive discussions and able to create a safe, inclusive learning environment aligned with the school’s values and safeguarding expectations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching & Learning
• Plan, deliver and evaluate engaging and relevant RSHE lessons in line with the school’s scheme of work and national guidance (including DfE RSHE [inc. PSHE] statutory requirements for relevant year groups).
• Create a supportive classroom climate where pupils feel able to express themselves respectfully on sensitive topics and improve their knowledge and skills using contextualised resources.
• Differentiate teaching materials to meet the needs of diverse learners.
• Use a variety of teaching strategies to encourage active participation, critical thinking, and the development of life skills.
Curriculum & Resources
• Contribute to the ongoing development of the RSHE curriculum, ensuring it remains current, relevant and responsive to our pupils’ needs.
• Integrate topics such as safeguarding, healthy relationships, digital literacy, mental health, citizenship, careers and financial education.
• Liaise with relevant internal and external specialists (e.g. school nurses, counsellors, visiting speakers) to enrich the programme.
Pastoral & Safeguarding
• Model and promote high standards of emotional intelligence, empathy and respect.
• Identify and respond to pastoral concerns, following the school’s safeguarding policies and referring pupils to the Designated Safeguarding Lead where appropriate.
• Contribute to the wider pastoral care system, attending meetings, providing input to pastoral reviews, and supporting whole school wellbeing initiatives.
Assessment & Reporting
• Monitor pupil engagement and progress, providing feedback in line with school expectations.
• Maintain accurate records of attendance, lesson content, and any concerns arising.
• Contribute to pupil reports and parent communication where required.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
• Strong understanding of PSHE and RSHE frameworks, guidance and best practice.
• Experience teaching or facilitating discussions with young people on sensitive subjects.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and listening skills.
• Ability to manage classroom dynamics calmly and effectively.
• Commitment to safeguarding, equality, and promoting pupil wellbeing.
Desirable
• Teaching qualification (QTS/PGCE or equivalent)
• Experience within an independent school environment.
• Training in counselling, mental health first aid, or youth work.
• Experience working with external agencies or delivering workshops.
