Last week the media was all abuzz with news of First Daughter Malia Obama’s summer job. The 15 year old is working as a production assistant on the set of the Steven Speilberg-produced CBS series “Extant” starring Halle Berry. Not too shabby, right? Of course, everyone called out nepotism and it is true that Malia probably does have better connections than most of us will (ever). But, at the same time, she is still doing very unglamourous things like fetching coffee and helping with computer shop alignments. It is a classic first job. We all have to start somewhere. So rest assured that even if you think your job could not get any more embarrassing beautiful, rich celebrities, famous politicians and uber-successful business executives were in your shoes at one point. Let’s take a look at the first jobs of some very famous people.

Bill Cosby

Everyone’s favorite TV dad was an avid athlete in high school but still found time to work as a stock boy at a supermarket.

Amy Adams

Oscar nominated Amy Adams worked as a waitress at Hooters to save up money for a car when she was 17. “I was a hostess at Hooters, and that was sort of fun. I was 17, and then when I was 18, I waited [tables] for about a month. I wasn’t cut out to be a waitress, and I certainly wasn’t cut out to be a Hooters waitress. That was a short-lived ambition. Everyone would agree, if they could see me, Hooters isn’t necessarily the best way to describe me.”

Keith Richards

The legendary rock star worked as a ball boy at a tennis club. Can you imagine?

Colin Powell

The stoic politician worked at a baby furniture store in the Bronx believe it or not. He even learned a little Yiddish as that was the language of most of his customers.

Warren Buffett

There is no doubt that the iconic businessman would have started on his path at a young age. His first job was at his grandfather’s grocery store and then eventually he worked his way up to a gig at J.C. Penney.

Ben Bernanke

The economist once worked as a waiter at the rather cheesy South of the Border. Nachos led to fiscal policy. Who knew?

Mitt Romney

The former Presidential candidate once worked as a chaeuffer while attending Stanford. Hopefully he didn’t put anyone’s dog on top of his car.

Madeline Albright

The former first female Secretary of State once sold bras at a department store.

Angela Merkel

The chancellor of Germany worked as a barmaid while studying in Leipzig University.

Gwen Stefani

The rocker/actress/designer once mopped floors at Dairy Queen. Where’s the album about that?

Rachel McAdams

Before she made us cry in “The Notebook”, the beautiful Rachel worked at McDonald’s for three years.
