Academic Director:

Reports to: School Director, Director of Academic Management and Vice President- Academic Affairs

EF International Language Campus is looking for an experienced leader to oversee the academic team at our Vancouver campus. The Academic Director manages every aspect of academic programming within the school (General English, Cambridge, University Prep) and leads a team of approximately 25 part-time and full-time teachers, as well as assisting with all functional and logistical aspects of the academic program. We are looking for someone who is “big-picture” minded, solution oriented and a natural leader.

THE ROLE:

  • Ensures academic excellence across all programs at the Vancouver school, with strong implementation of our EF learning system
  • Manages academic admin staff to ensure weekly, monthly quarterly deadlines are met
  • Manages a unionized cohort of teachers adhering to the Collective Agreement
  • Creates and schedules classes to meet student, teacher and operational needs, balancing quality and cost-effectiveness
  • Works closely with the teaching team to motivate and guide the school’s vision
  • An effective and timely decision maker who takes all stake-holders into account and balances the needs of the school with the needs of the academic department
  • Has a strong understanding of Cambridge exams and all Cambridge protocols in order to effectively run EF Vancouver’s Cambridge Exam Center (CA060) and keep it in good standing
  • Has an in-depth understanding of University Preparation Programs and the various pathways for international students to enter college or university in Canada and is able to counsel student in this direction
  • A proven understanding of the international sales market in order work with sales teams to develop and sell the University Preparation Program in Vancouver
  • Liaises with sales offices and answers queries related to all EF academic programs
  • Ensures that processes within the academic department are communicated and followed
  • Is always one-step ahead and has foresight in order to manage issues before they occur
  • Advises students regarding classes, programs, schedules and academic goals
  • Ensures teacher resources (books, computers, supplies) are maintained and support troubleshooting IT issues when required
  • Works closely with other departments to create a positive atmosphere and professional academic learning environment within the school, regularly assisting with school-wide initiatives and events
  • Recruits, on-boards and mentors star teachers trained in our Efekta methodology
  • Provides on-going opportunities for professional development to academic staff and teachers
  • Is a supportive team-leader to a high-quality teaching team who embody the EF core values; this includes conducting regular classroom observations and training/development sessions
  • Has an open-door policy for all staff and students
  • Teaches for emergency administrative or teaching cover
  • Manages and calls emergency teachers
  • Leads teacher meetings/academic meetings
  • Is responsible for implementing and adhering to all accreditation requirements for the academic department
  • Other duties may be assigned depending on the needs of the academic department and school

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Canadian work authorization
  • Fluent written/oral English language skills
  • Bachelor’s degree required/Masters degree preferred
  • CELTA/DELTA/TESL Canada Level 1 TESL and minimum 5 years teaching experience in an adult ESL environment
  • Fluent in a language other than English (not required but an asset)
  • Certificate in Mental Health First Aid
  • Has fluency in such programs as Atlantis, Jobvite, ADP, Zoom, Teams, Sharepoint and Excel
  • Experience as a Cambridge Center Exam Manager
  • Experience teaching B2, C1 and C2 Cambridge exam courses
  • Experience managing in a unionized environment is an asset
  • Experience in counseling international students living in Canada
  • A proven leader with the ability to motivate a diverse and experienced teaching team
  • Extremely flexible – evening and weekend work required at certain times of year
  • Goal-oriented and results-driven; accountable to firm deadlines
  • A team-player who goes above and beyond, never settling for the status quo
  • Cool under pressure – willing and able to take charge in an emergency, think and react quickly to daily surprises, comfortable with a fast-paced and ever-changing environment

SALARY RANGE $60,000-$65,000 CDN annually
