So What's the Job?
We’re looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the technical delivery and ongoing evolution of the backend systems that power our student journey. This role owns the services and integrations that connect our middleware to core platforms across our learning ecosystem - including learning management systems (Brightspace), community tooling (Circle), and other downstream systems - ensuring a reliable, scalable, and cohesive end-to-end experience for our students.
This is a hands-on leadership role: you’ll directly manage a small team of engineers, guide technical execution day-to-day, communicate clearly and proactively with the team, and stay close enough to the work to help unblock delivery and raise the bar on quality, speed, and clarity.
You’ll report to the SVP of Engineering and partner closely on architectural decisions and technical direction. While major platform choices are made collaboratively, you’ll be empowered to make technical calls for your team and act as the primary technical voice in cross-functional partnerships, especially with Product.

This role directly impacts the student experience and the systems that power learning delivery. You’ll lead the team responsible for making sure students can access, navigate, and complete their learning experience smoothly and reliably, while helping us scale and modernize the platform behind it.
What will you do?
- Team Leadership + Delivery
- Lead and grow a team of 4+ individual contributors, plus external resources/partners as needed
- Drive execution across sprint work, roadmap delivery, and fast-moving priorities
- Keep the team focused, unblocked, and operating with clear expectations, predictability, and strong accountability
- Coach engineers through technical decision-making, solution design, and reliable delivery
- Platform & Student Experience Systems
- Own delivery across key platforms and systems that support the student learning experience, including:
- Brightspace (LMS)
- Middleware/integration services
- Community platform tooling (Circle)
- Maintain system reliability and ensure a high-quality student experience (performance, stability, usability)
- Technical Ownership + Architecture Influence
- Stay hands-on enough to review code, guide implementation, and support complex problem-solving
- Stay technically engaged by contributing non-critical-path code changes when helpful
- Contribute to architecture and solution design decisions (you won’t be the “architect in a vacuum,” but you will inform and shape the decisions)
- Serve as a technical soundboard for engineers and help the team make confident, high-quality calls
- Cross-Functional Partnership
- Partner closely with Product to translate roadmap goals into executable technical plans
- Triage incoming work and balance competing priorities across roadmap, support needs, tech debt, and foundational improvements
- Act as the technical advocate and primary point of contact for your domain in cross-functional settings
- Field technical questions from stakeholders and represent your team with clarity and confidence
Qualifications
- Required Experience
- 3+ years managing and developing engineering teams
- 7+ years of technical experience in software engineering
- Experience leading delivery for platform systems, integrations, middleware, or complex third-party ecosystems
- Strong ability to balance strategy + execution (you can zoom out and get into the details)
- Proven track record of partnering cross-functionally with Product and other business stakeholders
- Confidence in making technical calls and owning outcomes
- Actively uses generative AI tools as a copilot in day-to-day engineering work, and is comfortable integrating them into team workflows.
- Preferred Experience
- Experience in B2C, e-learning, subscription, or student/customer-facing products
- Familiarity with LMS ecosystems (Brightspace/D2L a plus)
- Experience managing external dev resources or vendors
- Background in APIs, middleware, integrations, and multi-system workflows
- Comfort operating in environments with ambiguity, growth, and change
