In this role, you will help strengthen Elsevier journals’ leadership and impact across China, which is one of the world’s most dynamic research ecosystems.

About the Role

The Director of Marketing, STMJ China is a senior leadership role responsible for driving growth, reputation, and impact of Elsevier’s global journal portfolio, including Cell Press and The Lancet, in China. The role leads the development and execution of an integrated, China-specific marketing strategy aligned with STMJ Business Units , including Cell Press and The Lancet publishing and marketing strategies, while supporting Elsevier's broader China strategy, spanning online and offline channels such as events, researcher engagement programs, digital marketing, social media, and strategic partnerships. Marketing approaches are tailored across journal segments while ensuring consistent brand positioning and strong value communication to Chinese research community.

As a key bridge between global strategy and local execution, the Director collaborates closely with global teams across functions to deliver coordinated, data-driven, and AI-enabled initiatives. The role also contributes to STMJ China strategic planning and is accountable for enhancing marketing effectiveness, fostering collaboration, and supporting sustainable growth of Elsevier journals in China.

This role reports directly to the Managing Director, STMJ China, and serves as a key leadership position across Elsevier’s global marketing teams, spanning physical sciences, life sciences, social sciences and economics, and health and medical sciences, including prestigious journals from Cell Press and The Lancet. The role operates within a matrix governance framework, with strong alignment and regular engagement with STMJ Business Unites, including Cell Press and The Lancet global marketing leadership to ensure China execution remains aligned with portfolio strategies and priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • China Marketing Strategy & Market Growth: Drive a coherent integrated, insight‑driven STMJ China marketing strategy that supports growth across Elsevier journals, including Cell Press and The Lancet.

  • Brand Leadership & Academic Influence: Elevate STMJ and premium journal brands in China through strong positioning, academic leadership, and sustained visibility among top researchers and institutions.

  • Cross‑Functional Alignment & Global Collaboration: Maximize marketing effectiveness through strong alignment across China and global teams in a matrixed environment.

  • Marketing Performance, Data & AI Enablement: Drive disciplined, data‑ and AI‑enabled marketing execution with clear visibility of impact and continuous optimization.

  • Team Leadership, Performance & Operational Excellence: Build and lead a high‑performing STMJ China marketing organization delivering consistent results.

Requirements

  • 10+ years’ marketing experience in STM, scholarly publishing, or related sectors, including 5+ years in senior leadership roles

  • Excellent executive communication, storytelling, and presentation skills; fluent in English and native Mandarin; relevant degree required (advanced degree preferred)

  • Proven track record of delivering insight‑driven marketing strategies with measurable growth and brand impact

  • Strong understanding of the China research ecosystem and academic publishing landscape

  • Experience working effectively across global, matrixed organizations and cross‑functional teams

  • Proven capability to build and lead high‑performing teams, driving accountability and talent development while effectively managing change and fostering a growth mindset and psychologically safe environment

  • Skilled senior stakeholder manager with the ability to influence and align diverse, cross‑cultural audiences

  • Strong capabilities in data‑driven marketing, performance optimization, and application of AI technologies, with a proven track record of delivering technology‑enabled marketing innovation

  • Demonstrates a strong curiosity mindset and the ability to collaborate effectively across functional, cultural, and organizational boundaries
