About the Role:

We are seeking a highly experienced subject matter expert in Food Sciences to join our editorial team as an Editor-in-Chief or Deputy Editor.

In this role, you will lead the peer review process, commission high-quality content, and represent our journals within the global scientific community. You will work with a high degree of independence, manage complex editorial decisions, mentor colleagues, and drive initiatives that enhance journal performance and impact.

How you will make an impact:

Manuscript Handling

  • Conduct subject-matter-expert (SME) screening of manuscripts at appropriate workflow stages
  • Evaluate submissions for suitability, making prompt decisions aligned with journal scope and policy
  • Select and invite qualified reviewers
  • Assess reviewer reports and make decisions (Accept / Revise / Reject / Refer)
  • Review revised manuscripts for quality and completeness of responses
  • Identify appropriate transfer outlets where relevant
  • Address author rebuttals and ensure timely resolution
  • Raise research integrity concerns through appropriate channels

Content Commissioning

  • Commission high-quality content, including invited reviews and special issues
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key authors and contributors
  • Drive manuscript submissions within the Food Sciences community
  • Define and refine journal aims and scope in collaboration with stakeholders
  • Recommend and appoint Editorial Board members
  • Partner with management to plan commissioning strategy, KPIs, and resourcing

Community Engagement

  • Maintain strong visibility within the Food Sciences research community
  • Attend and represent the journal at conferences, seminars, and industry events
  • Build networks to enhance journal reputation, submissions, and scientific insight
  • Actively use digital and social media channels (e.g., LinkedIn and other relevant platforms) to promote journal content, engage with the research community, and enhance journal visibility
  • Engage in ongoing outreach to strengthen community connections and awareness

Performance & Continuous Improvement

  • Analyze journal performance data to identify trends and improvement opportunities
  • Lead and contribute to strategic initiatives to enhance peer review quality and efficiency
  • Collaborate with Editorial Excellence and cross-functional teams
  • Play a leading role in subject-area clusters across editorial teams

Training & Development

  • Provide peer-to-peer guidance and knowledge sharing
  • Mentor and support junior editors and colleagues
  • Contribute to capability development within the editorial community

Additional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate across multiple Food Science titles and with other Editors-in-Chief
  • Contribute ideas for new products, journal development, and strategic initiatives
  • Support broader organizational goals through cross-team collaboration

What we look for:

  • Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Food Sciences or a related discipline
  • Strong track record of research and publication
  • Extensive experience in peer review and manuscript handling
  • Deep understanding of scholarly publishing and research integrity
  • Proven ability to engage with scientific communities and build networks
  • Strong decision-making skills and ability to manage complex editorial cases
  • Collaborative mindset with experience mentoring or leading others

It is anticipated that most qualified candidates will fall within the range, however the ultimate salary offered for this role may be higher or lower and will be set based on a variety of non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to, geographic location, skills, and competencies.
