Software Engineering Manager

About the Role
We’re looking for a Software Engineering Manager to join a high-functioning engineering group on our Financials product. In this role, you’ll be collaborating with other engineering managers/leaders to set product vision, align strategy with business goals, and empower the team to deliver solutions that delight our higher education customers. You’ll partner closely with product, engineering, and executive leadership to bring innovative SaaS products to life.

The ideal candidate is both an empathetic leader and a strategic thinker — someone who can inspire teams, foster collaboration, and ensure execution that drives measurable impact. This role is perfect for someone who understands that the highest quality software is delivered by teams backed by leaders who prioritize people as humans and who aren’t afraid of tackling human problems in addition to technical problems.
Who are we?
Kuali builds software solutions for higher education. We help our customers — colleges & universities — focus on providing a fantastic education to students by decreasing their administrative costs. We work in a competitive space, ripe for innovation, with users ready to be delighted. We are poised for high growth.

Our Culture
As a company, we are guided by our cultural values:
  • Iterate to evolve
  • Cultivate openness
  • Act with accountability
  • Assume the best
  • Practice humility
  • Deliver amazing experiences
  • Drive outcomes
At Kuali, we learn from and teach each other, we practice transparency and empathy, we delight in delivering value to our customers, and we WIN!

We’ve embraced distributed work for years—it’s part of who we are. Many of our employees work remotely across the U.S., from Massachusetts to Sacramento, while others collaborate in person at our office locations. We’re intentional about creating a healthy, connected culture, wherever you work.

What you’ll be responsible for
  • Lead and coach engineers: hire, onboard, mentor, and develop engineers through regular 1:1s, feedback, and career planning.
  • Drive execution: plan and deliver work in an iterative cadence; translate goals into milestones, manage scope, and remove blockers.
  • Partner cross-functionally: collaborate with Product on discovery, requirements, tradeoffs, and delivery; ensure alignment and clear communication.
  • Guide technical direction (hands-on as needed): review designs, guide architecture decisions, and help teams make pragmatic choices that scale.
  • Support production systems: champion observability, incident management, and postmortems; ensure systems meet SLAs/SLOs where applicable.
  • Enable high engineering performance: we have team standards for code quality, testing, security, performance, and reliability across our Java and React web apps; ensure your staff of engineers has everything they need to meet those standards.
  • Manage customer and stakeholder relationships: provide clear status updates, surface risks early, and communicate delivery timelines with confidence.
About you
  • You have leadership experience: You have 3+ years managing software engineers (or leading teams) and 6+ years in software engineering (or equivalent).
  • You align with Kuali’s values: You model curiosity, openness, accountability, and a commitment to delivering amazing experiences.
  • You’re a resourceful executor: You take broad vision, collaborate on strategic priorities, and own the steps required to make it real, from planning to hands-on implementation.
  • You’re calm under pressure: You can handle shifting priorities, ambiguity, and fast-changing situations with resilience.
  • You’re collaborative and influential: You build trust quickly and communicate clearly across all levels of the organization.
  • You’re organized and detail-oriented: You can manage multiple projects at once without losing sight of the big picture.
  • You thrive in remote environments: You know how to create alignment and connection across distributed teams.
  • You roll up your sleeves: You’re comfortable being the ‘doer of last resort’ in a resource-constrained environment.
Ideal candidates have experience with:
  • Delivering Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions
  • Building software or web applications with Java or other object-oriented languages
  • Driving incremental refactoring initiatives
  • Engaging with the Higher Education community
Perks
  • 4-day, 32-hour work week (we call Thursdays "Kuali Friday")
  • The opportunity to work to together with smart, passionate people to build a high growth, highly profitable SaaS company
  • Flexible remote work with no expectation of returning to an office setting
  • A truly exceptional benefits package, including 100% company-paid medical and dental insurance
  • 100% 401(k) matching up to 4%
  • Paid Maternity/Parental leave
  • Flexible PTO — no accrual limits, no ‘use it or lose it.’ Just work with your manager to make sure the team’s covered, and take the time you need to recharge.
  • Encouragement and support for ongoing learning and skill development
  • Recognition platform to celebrate contributions with meaningful incentives
