About the role

We are excited to be adding a HR Manager to our HR team in the UK. It takes a team of talented values-driven people to deliver our award-winning products and services and the HR Manager will be central to ensuring that we have an engaged team of talented people with the resources and structure to allow them to do their best work.


The successful candidate will play a significant role in executing the strategic business plans. Using your knowledge and experience of human resource practice, you will act as a trusted partner to the Learning Pool team ensuring that HR policies, processes, projects and strategies are delivered in a way that reflects our culture and values. This hand on role is instrumental in helping to build a high performing and engaged team across the business.

Location: Hybrid model, working from home with regular attendance at one of our Learning Pool Offices (Derry, Nottingham, Oxford, Belfast or Glasgow). Commuting distance to the Derry office is highly desirable.

What you will be doing

Roles and responsibilities include:

  • Leading the UK based HR function, providing support to the wider team in EMEA and APAC
  • Contributing to the HR strategy and planning to ensure alignment to the business strategy and goals
  • Designing and developing HR policies, procedures and initiatives that strive to be best in class with Learning Pool as exemplars of HR practice that goes beyond legal compliance.
  • Partnering with stakeholders across the business to ensure effective planning and confident execution of HR initiatives
  • Acting as a subject matter expert on HR issues for managers and the wider Learning Pool team, providing advice and guidance as well as coaching and mentoring.
  • Providing hands on support for investigative, disciplinary, grievance, ill health and related employee relations matters.
  • Handling time-sensitive deadlines with a high degree of attention to detail, dealing with confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
  • Promoting positive employee relations, open communication, a sense of cooperation and tolerance; making a positive impact on how team members experience organisational change
  • Generating data as required for management information and compliance (e.g. statistical analysis, management reports) and use this data to identify trends and inform decisions accordingly
  • Supporting M&A activity, specifically people integration post acquisition
  • Providing administrative assistance as required e.g. maintenance of HR systems in relation to new joiners, internal changes and leavers.

Who we are looking for

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • A proven track record: You will have proven experience as a Human Resources practitioner, with experience of handling complex employee relations issues, in a fast growing business
  • Leadership: You will have experience of managing HR professionals, encouraging continuous professional development and facilitating team knowledge and skills growth.
  • Legal understanding: You will understand the legal framework which underpins HR policies such as grievance, performance management, recruitment and selection with experience of applying this knowledge in the UK and Northern Ireland
  • Commercial acumen: You will have a clear understanding of the business impact of effective HR practice
  • Excellent partnering skills: You will be able to assess what is happening in the wider business, listen carefully to stakeholders and translate needs, providing guidance and expertise on the approach to achieve results
  • Communication skills: You will have the confidence, knowledge, and skill to facilitate broad-ranging conversations with a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Technical competence: You will be comfortable using various technology such as HR information systems, Microsoft office tools and Google suite.
  • Exceptional organisational skills and keen attention to detail: You will ensure that you keep tasks on track, prioritise effectively and take ownership for ensuring commitments are met
  • A focus on continuous improvement: You will look for opportunities to keep improving our processes and service. This includes championing best practice and benchmarking our processes against best in class companies
  • Positive, solutions focused outlook: You will ask "What can we do to make this happen?" rather than "I don't know how this would work"
