JOB SUMMARY

The Copy Editor will assist the Associate Editorial Director and work closely with Creative team members to hone and maintain brand voice and tone and oversee the reviewing and editing of content to ensure clarity, consistency, and correctness—making sure all materials adhere to the Scholastic Reading Events (SRE) style guide and meet the highest standards of quality. This work is inclusive of three SRE brands: Book Fairs, Book Clubs, and Storyvoice.

The Copy Editor’s day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Proofreading: Checking for grammatical, spelling, punctuation, and formatting errors
  • Fact-checking: Verifying numerical information like dates, codes, and statistics
  • Editing: Revising text to improve its style and readability
  • Layout: Providing recommendations for the arrangement of text and images
  • Style: Maintaining the SRE Style Guide and ensuring all materials adhere to the guide for each of the businesses
  • Legal: Checking for issues with the Legal department on messaging, copyrights, etc.
  • Collaboration: Working with writers, designers, and production staff

The Copy Editor will also assist with the management and implementation of copy content tools and processes cross-functionally, and provide support to Editorial Team staff, contractors, and freelancers, as needed.

This position reports to the Associate Editorial Director, Marketing.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Associate Editorial Director and work closely with other members of the Editorial, Creative, and Marketing teams on the day-to-day reviewing and editing of all materials across SRE.
  • Oversee the SRE Style Guide and ensure its continuing maintenance with updates as needed—must be able to position themselves as the go-to resource for grammar, style, etc. across SRE.
  • Help with the management and implementation of copy content tools and processes cross-functionally, as well as provide support to Editorial Team staff, contractors, and freelancers, across SRE as needed.
  • Stay up-to-date on book industry news and trends, the latest individual titles offered at Fairs, Clubs, and Storyvoice, and Book Fair host chatter via shared subscriptions to trade publications, internal communications from Product, and regular updates around our Closed Facebook Group.
  • Actively seek out and share references, inspiration, and data points for creative approaches that are relevant and timely to our brand, the marketplace, and the zeitgeist.

Qualifications

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Model communicator with an exceptional command of written language and strong understanding of grammar, punctuation, and style rules; an eagle eye for detail; and an intense appreciation for visual presentation and platform context
  • Must have solid knowledge of marketing language and the nuances of shifting writing voice for various audiences
  • Continued curiosity of digital marketing best practices
  • Proven self-starter with a great attitude and thoughtful point-of-view
  • Top-notch organization, time-, and project-management skills, with an ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and work independently in a fast-paced remote environment
  • Experience working within and collaborating with cross-functional teams at all levels, as well as third-party agencies and partners
  • Strong desire to work for Scholastic and drive brand affinity
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft-based software: Teams, Outlook, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and G Suite

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Communications, Advertising/Marketing, Journalism, English or related Writing degree
  • 2+ years’ experience copy editing and proofreading in media, agency, and/or branded content environments

The salary range for this position is $44,000 to $56,100 annually.
