OUR COMPANY
SimX is a fast-growing company that has brought virtual and augmented reality to medical simulation training. At the end of 2024, we were acquired by Madison Industries, a partnership that has provided a surge in resources to accelerate our growth and mission. Our professional-grade VR system is the first of its kind, used by physicians, nurses, and paramedics to reduce medical errors and save lives.
Over the last decade, demand for our product has exploded; we are now used by 10 of the nation’s top 15 hospitals, including world-renowned institutions like the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, and the University of Pennsylvania, our product is used around the world, and our technology is deployed across more than 50 US Military installations. We are looking for a mission-driven engineering leader to help us continue this momentum and achieve our mission to save lives around the world through better, faster, and more accessible simulation training.
THE MISSION
Reporting directly to the CEO, the Vice President of Engineering will be the executive leader of our engineering organization. Your mission is to further develop the maturity of our engineering organization, foster a culture of engineering excellence in a time of unprecedented change to engineering practices, and accelerate the delivery of our life-saving VR products. You will guide the evolution of our technical platform, ensuring it is robust, scalable, extensible, and capable of supporting our rapid growth as we scale toward $50M+ in ARR and beyond.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Engineering Leadership & Vision
- Partner with the CEO, CTO, and executive team to define and execute the technical and engineering roadmap, ensuring alignment with our mission, product strategy, and market expansion goals.
- Architect a long-term engineering strategy that balances rapid feature delivery with scalable, secure, and maintainable infrastructure.
- Define, track, and report engineering KPIs that give the executive team and Madison Industries leadership clear visibility into delivery, quality, and team health.
- Adapt the engineering organization to the rapidly advancing frontier of engineering processes, including the ubiquitous use of AI tooling, in order to maximize the performance of the team.
Team Building & Organizational Scaling
- Recruit, mentor, and develop a world-class, distributed engineering team, scaling the organization to support a business 10x its current size.
- Establish robust engineering management practices, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Manage the company’s Engineering division, including direct reports at the Director level and technical leads and individual contributors through the reporting chain, and own its organizational design.
- Develop a strong engineering leadership bench (managers and technical leads) and ensure they are capable of independently owning major engineering areas as the organization grows.
Engineering Execution and Effectiveness
- Own the end-to-end software development lifecycle, driving disciplined agile practices that deliver predictable, high-quality releases.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Operations, and Clinical Education teams to ensure engineering outputs consistently meet the rigorous standards required for professional healthcare training.
- Drive operational excellence by ensuring adoption and continuous improvement of best practices (e.g., optimizing CI/CD pipelines, automating testing, reducing technical debt), as well as integrating new approaches (e.g., AI-driven testing, automated code reviews, etc.) when appropriate.
Architecture, Quality, & Security
- Oversee the design and evolution of our platform architecture, ensuring high availability, performance, and scalability across global education, hospital and military deployments.
- Complete the platform’s transition to a fully composable architecture of well-separated, extensible components that can be combined to serve any scenario, product, or market.
- Standardize how platform components are designed, described, and documented (consistent interface contracts and rich, machine-readable metadata) to ensure that scenarios and products can be composed through tooling.
- Establish engineering standards that ensure software is secure, reliable, maintainable, and observable throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Lead continuing efforts to support our enterprise customers via an engineering focus on security and compliance (e.g., SOC 2 and other relevant certifications, secure software development lifecycle, and broad adoption of best practices).
- Own engineering metrics related to software quality, platform reliability, security posture, technical debt, and performance.
- Establish engineering ownership for production reliability, including monitoring, incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement.
