About the Position
We're seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a team shaping the next generation of learning, tutoring, and student success products. In this role, you'll balance hands-on technical leadership with people management, driving both the execution of critical features and the evolution of engineering practices that enable your team to deliver with greater velocity and quality.
This is a unique opportunity to make an immediate impact as we scale our engineering organization. You'll lead a team of 3-6 engineers, contributing directly to code and architecture while coaching your team to grow their skills and adopt modern development practices. The ideal candidate is passionate about continuous improvement—whether that's improving the developer experience, enhancing CI/CD pipelines, evolving testing strategies, improving quality assurance processes, or championing the adoption of AI-powered development tools. You'll serve as a change agent, helping shape not just what we build, but how we build it.
What You'll Do
- Technical Leadership
- Contribute hands-on to code, architecture, and technical design while leading the team (approximate 50/50 IC/management split)
- Drive improvements to engineering practices in areas such as developer efficiency, CI/CD, testing strategies, quality assurance, or AI tool adoption
- Team Development
- Build and develop a high-performing team of 3-6 engineers through effective coaching, feedback, and career development
- As part of a small engineering leadership team, foster a culture of psychological safety, collaboration, and continuous learning
- Delivery & Collaboration
- Partner with Product and Design to translate business goals into clear technical plans and ensure consistent execution
- Communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences, ensuring alignment and managing dependencies
- Drive measurable improvements in team velocity and delivery quality
Who You Are
- You have 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with at least 3+ years of people management experience leading engineering teams
- You have strong hands-on experience with C# and .NET technologies, with the ability to contribute meaningfully to code and technical design (React experience is a plus)
- You have strong hands-on experience with database design and SQL (MSSQL experience is a plus)
- You are a change agent with demonstrated experience driving process improvements in areas such as CI/CD, testing practices, quality assurance, or adoption of new development tools and technologies
- You balance strategic thinking with tactical execution, able to zoom out to see the big picture while also diving into technical details when needed
- You have a track record of improving team velocity and delivery quality through systematic identification and resolution of bottlenecks
- You excel at developing others, with experience coaching engineers at various skill levels and helping them grow their technical and professional capabilities
- You communicate with clarity and empathy, adapting your style to your audience and building trust across diverse stakeholders
- You demonstrate sound judgment in balancing tradeoffs between scope, quality, speed, and long-term technical health
- You model collaborative, inclusive leadership that creates psychological safety and empowers team members to do their best work
- You take ownership and accountability for both individual and team outcomes, addressing challenges proactively and with integrity
